We have made the decision to pause recruitment for our Co-Facilitator role.

There are many changes afoot at Shift and our intention is to shape and hold our new structure as deliberately and responsibly as we can. We feel that at this moment, this means exercising caution and care in the way we adopt these changes to a more participatory, sociocratic model. Thanks to the incredible support behind our "Shifting Shift" crowdfunder, we are well underway in this process, but it has taken longer than we had initially planned. We are about to welcome a new Operations Lead to the team, and the coming months will be about building the systems, roles and rhythms that will let our new way of working thrive.

We believe that strong foundations now mean a healthier, more resilient Shift for years to come — and this includes how we bring new people into the team. Rather than recruit into a structure that is still taking shape, we want to pause, find our feet first, and then reopen this role when we can offer greater capacity to support the induction and integration of the successful applicant.

Practical Sustainability Course Co-Facilitator

SHIFT Bristol is looking to hire a Co-Facilitator to support the delivery, relational culture, and practical flow of the Practical Sustainability Course alongside the Lead PSC Facilitator.

Location: On-site (Bristol and field trip locations)

Hours: 2 days / 15 hours per week

Contract: Employee, 1 year initial contract with potential to extend

Remuneration: £11,700 per year/ £15 per hr (pro rata equivalent of £29,250 FTE) 

The majority needs to be across either Tues-Weds or Weds-Thurs to overlap with the PSC Lead Facilitator and regular meetings. Some flexibility may be required around key points in the annual cycle.

This role is for someone who can help hold a strong container for student learning and growth. This means embodying the warm and welcoming energy necessary to help students feel calm, comfortable and connected, whilst maintaining clear boundaries and modelling good self-care as a commitment to caring for the whole.

The Co-Facilitator will help SHIFT develop greater capacity and dynamism by continuing to empower students' voices to be heard and get their needs met, whilst enabling the Lead Facilitator to develop new strategic aspects of the role.

Co-Facilitation is about working with others to support the group to discover, develop a healthy and inclusive culture, and achieve its purpose. Despite the need for clear processes and consistency, much of the work is invisible and requires a great level of self-awareness, compassion and (sometimes) diplomacy.

The role combines:

• practical facilitation support

• student relationship building

• logistical coordination

• progressive facilitation development through mentorship and collaborative practice

The Co-Facilitator acts as a consistent supportive presence within the student experience while developing confidence, skills, and leadership capacity within a supported facilitation structure.

The role is designed as both:

• an operational facilitation role

• a developmental mentorship pathway into deeper facilitation responsibility over time

The role is primarily shaped by:

• Collaborative facilitation and delivery support 

• Student relationship and group support 

• Practical coordination and logistics

• Learning, mentorship, and facilitation development 

• Group culture and participation support 

You will need to be relationally skilled, and able to work with complexity. You will also need to be comfortable working in a small values-led organisation that is developing shared governance and working collaboratively.

SHIFT Bristol delivers practitioner-led education in sustainability, regenerative land use, Permaculture, ecological design, community resilience, and practical land skills. Our work includes the year-long Practical Sustainability Course and shorter Permaculture Design Certificate courses.
